Aldi Effect

The term "Aldi Effect" has been used to convey the idea that during recessionary times shoppers will dessert Tesco and Asda is order to save money.

Instead they will visit Aldi and Lidl, cut-price supermarkets which have recently prospered.

Although the arguement is a tempting one it does not explain the recent success of the more upmarket chain, Waitrose.

Figures to support these theories can be found on the Newsbank database.

Look at shops which have disappeared in Luton or your local town lately.

Business Ethics

If you are attempting an AMP Question on business ethics ( particularly about the ethics of advertising harmful products such as cigarettes ) bear in mind that you may find information in health and social science journals which you do not normally use ( as well as titles like Business Ethics )

Here is an example of an article which I traced using the ASSIA database

Assessing the cumulative impact of alcohol marketing on young people's drinking: cross-sectional data findings

Gordon, Ross; Harris, Fiona; Mackintosh, Anne Marie; Moodie, Crawford

Addiction Research & Theory, vol. 19, no. 1, pp. 66-75, 2011

Case Studies in Marketing

Another new addition to stock, AMP students are advised to beat the Autumn intake to this 2011 publication. The author is from nearby Cranfield University. It contains plenty of up-to-date case studies as indicated by the logos on the cover !

AMP Marketing Students

Beat the rush to this new text which we have recently added to stock. It's going to be the recommended text on MAR-005-3 Marketing in Contexts 2011 from next academic year so we are expecting a high demand.

Marketing the Arts

Recently added to the LRC is the MA by R.L Saklatvala
Designing an arts festival : constructing authenticity
University of Beds 2010
Lots of local examples about organising the Luton B Festival ( including a useful list of local names - photographer Ben Hodson gets a namecheck )
I think it would be beneficial to look at this if your AMP concerned any kind of arts marketing, or comparison between commercial and community schemes ?
( do the same principles apply )

Marketing Financial Services

New book by a member of staff in the Business School. Jillian Farquar has recently published a book on the marketing of financial services. Could be a useful source for those of you whose project concerns finance or accountancy.

Will be added to LRC as soon as possible.

Junk Mail RIP ?

Haywood, M (2010) Personalisation : does this mean more effecient marketing and the end of junk mail ? Market Leader Journal, Quarter 2 accessed via WARC [online] through http://library.beds.ac.uk/ on 25th March 2010

Is it really the case, as argued here, that targeting us individually means we'll never get another pizza ad through the door ? Perhaps not, but the above article is a useful look at new marketing methods, and it also predicts the demise of the loyalty card.

A really good look at the future of marketing methods ( as pictured on my somewhat old fashioned PC ! )

Marketing and new social media

Do marketing methods alter radically if you are using Social Media ( Facebook, Twitter ) rather than more traditional marketing techniques ?

From a recent article on MediaTel Neil Perkin assesses some of the main of using Social Media for Marketing benefits. For more detail visit his blog
http://neilperkin.typepad.com/

I hope that I've not misrepresented him here.
1. Fans, even virtual ones, have made a commitment. You have found out who they are...
2. Engaged users ( fans/friends ) care more than searchers
3. Those who interact are advocates ( they tell their mates ? )
4. Search engine weight is improved by having lots of fans.
5. You've found loads of people..now you can target them
6. Interacting with your customers is easier.
7. Different marketing strategies can now be employed
( I got puzzled here about what these might be )
8. Advertising through social media sites will become ever-
more important.
9. Real time feedback ( see no.6 presumably )
10. Your audience awaits ( everyone is on Facebook already )
